A range of meanings for the word skill which could be applied in different contexts! This universe demands skill from all its beings. Even a
tiny Red Ant had to display specific skills for his survival inside my ear! A
cockroach is adept at tactics when its being caught. A lizard has the skill to
shed off his tail and run away when it is in danger. We as humans develop and
learn skills at every point in our lives, starting from our skill to handle
something as simple as a newspaper every morning? Surprised!?
Well, let’s look
at it from the synonym point of view.
One needs 'expertise', 'expertness' to turn the pages of a
newspaper under a speeding ceiling fan. It is absolutely necessary to have a
quick 'adeptness' and 'adroitness' to learn how to read a daily in the morning.
This particular act depends on the 'ability' of a person's 'dextrity' to do the
same.
I must admit that my father lacked the right 'aptitude' and to learn the 'art' of reading a newspaper. His 'cleverness' and 'smartness' did not add to his 'experience' even though reading a newspaper in the mornings has been happening for quite a good number of years
My mother always has a
'knack' for doing things. Her 'versatility' in the 'know-how's' of doing
things did contribute a lot to the 'flair', 'finesse' and 'mastery' on how to
read a newspaper without getting clumsy. She saw my father mumble and fumble to
turn the pages!
She enjoyed watching him babble about the front page cut into
two halves for advertisement purposes; She also gave an ear to his complaints
about the daily compromising with a low quality paper; She happily allowed him
to grudge for sometime and then stepped in to his rescue. With true
'professionalism' and 'ingenuity' she asked my father to change his reading
position away from the fan. There was quiet and peace at once!
Reading a newspaper is indeed a skill.
